ABOUT US
WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE

Last season I harvested over 150 pounds of jack-o-lantern pumpkins. I proudly shared photos of them online. The questions trickled back. “How did you get them so big?” “How did you get so many?” “How did you do that?!”
Uh.
I didn’t.
I never planted a single pumpkin seed! They didn’t even grow in the beds I’d prepared. It was the result of tossing my jack-o-lantern pumpkins from the previous year into the compost. When vines erupted out of the old compost pile and took over the squash bed I just went with it and watered them. The pumpkins carved out a place and purpose for themselves with no regard for what’s written in Better Homes and Gardens or the Farmer’s Almanac. In other words, they were weeds! Like the other weeds in my garden, they lived their life undisturbed by any effort on my part to control what was going on. Such is my approach to gardening. I don’t know what I’m doing, last season was my first attempt at in-ground vegetable gardening. I am an observer, fascinated and in awe of what I see happening out in the dirt. Many of the people I have studied online got into gardening in the very same way – without prior knowledge, full of curiosity and enthusiasm. They learn from their own ecosystem, ignoring shelves full of artificial chemicals we are told we must use, and laborious work we are told we must do for anything to grow “properly”.
The rule breaking gardeners. The no chemical-no fertilizer-no tilling gardeners. The weedy-buggy-living ecosystem gardeners. The lazy happy gardeners!
